Frequently Asked Questions

Ritual

Q: Do you perform legal marriage ceremonies?
A: No. We are happy to help couples celebrate their union through a spiritual ceremony of commitment. We are happy, whenever possible, to direct couples toward government agencies who can offer legal sanction to a marriage.

Q: Why don't you do legal marriage ceremonies?
A: We don't offer legal sanction of marriages for two reasons. First, we want all couples to have access to all of our offerings, but not all couples can be legally married. Second, we believe that legal marriage is best bestowed upon a couple by a government entity and that a spiritual ceremony be offered by a spiritual leader.

Q: Do you officiate at funerals or memorial services?
A: Yes. We are happy to work with individuals to create and lead a ceremony to mark the death of a loved one.

Q: What are your fees for creating and leading rituals?
A: We have listed fees for weddings because they are relatively standard events. Proposals for fees for all other rituals will be offered following an initial meeting to explore the possibility of working together.

Embodiment

Q: What is InterPlay?
A: Good question. InterPlay uses the tools of movement, storytelling, and vocalization to unlock the wisdom of our bodies. In western culture and particularly western religious traditions, we don't connect our bodies with our spirituality. InterPlay is a way to be present to what's happening in our bodies and using that information to make choices about life, relationships, and vocation.

Spiritual

Q: What is spiritual direction?
A: Spiritual direction is sacred listening. In spiritual direction, director and directee journey together for a time in order to listen together for the call of God in one of their lives. Through listening and reflecting in a confidential setting of prayer and encouragement, we seek to discern God's leading.

Q: Is spiritual direction only for Christians?
A: No. Spiritual direction is for those with any faith tradition or none at all, but who are seeking to attend to their lives and that which is beyond their lives.

Q: How much do you charge for spiritual direction?
A: Our fee for spiritual direction is $120 per hour. However, we work with all individuals to offer spiritual companionship regardless of income level or ability to pay.

Q: How long are the retreats that you lead?
A: We lead retreats anywhere from a half day to a week, depending upon the desires of the group and the content of the retreat.

Q: When will you offer your next pilgrimage?
A: We are working on creating a pilgrimage that will take place in the spring of 2010.

Discernment

Q: What tools do you use to help individuals with discernment?
A: We work with individuals to offer practices that will help them listen for who they are called to be and how they are called to live. One of the best tools for individuals is the clearness committee, a Quaker discernment tool.

Q: What kinds of things do you help groups and communities discern?
A: We work with groups and communities of any size to help them discern questions of identity, leadership, future steps, and many more. If you have a question or need to make a decision about something, discernment is a beautiful and powerful tool.
